Bankruptcy and Religion
There are many incorrect and potentially hurtful assumptions about people who file for bankruptcy, including the idea that bankruptcy is a sign of weakness, surrender, or irresponsibility. In addition to the stresses most people experience when struggling with debt, the burden of these stereotypes can be too much. In times of great emotional stress, some people turn to religion as a source of peace.
Not everyone is religious, of course, and the decision to seek help in religion (or not) is a very personal one. Some people who turn to religion might be uncertain of their tradition’s views on bankruptcy. Attitudes toward bankruptcy do vary from one religious tradition to another, and even within particular traditions. Sources of authoritative information on these attitudes depend on your practice.
Many religious traditions draw on scriptural texts for answers to these questions. Some of the most widely-followed scriptures, including the Bible and the Qur’an, address the issue of bankruptcy. The Torah, or Old Testament, designates every seventh year as a Sabbath year, where debts are released. The Qur’an says that anyone who is unable to pay their debts should be given enough time to do so.
